BURNS SUPPER 27 January 2012

The life and times of Robert Burns were celebrated in cracking style by members and guests at the annual Burns Supper on Friday 27th January. Host Alisdair Drummond opened the proceedings with the The Selkirk Grace, then the haggis was piped in and placed before an exuberant Billy Whytock whose rousing rendition of the Address to the Haggis received a hearty cheer.

We enjoyed a traditional tasty bill o' fare, before settling down to enjoy the reflections and commentary on the life and times of Burns by our talented speakers, all members of our club. How lucky we are to have so many members willing to give their time and energies to help our club.

The Immortal Memory by Jim McClurg was a sensitive and moving tribute to Burns, followed by Billy Whytock's spirited delivery of The Soldier's Return. The Toast to the Lassies by Brian Duncan raised the interesting question of the scarcity of Scottish lady poets in Burns' times, and he provided three fine examples of poems by contemporary authoresses.

Sandy Bushy replied to Brian's toast, by reflecting on how Burns might have viewed today's lady golfers, and offered a humorous poem of her own, in the style of Burns, on the way men in Blairgowrie Golf Club inter-act with Lady members. (Big cheers from the ladies!)

The evening was rounded of with a witty Vote of Thanks from Robin Duncan, followed by everyone joining in to sing Auld Lang Syne.

Congratulations must go to Liz Fertacz and her team on the Social committee for a splendid evening.

A dusting of snow combined with overnight frost made conditions tricky for Winter League this morning. We had great fun trying to master the uneven rocky greens, with some coping better than others.

There was a moderate turn out for the first Stanley Clark round of the year on Lansdowne.The weather was nice with glimpses of sun all the way round; so an enjoyable time was had by us all - even if the putting was still a bit of a lottery!

The 2012 golfing year got off to a great start this morning with fine, bracing weather greeting the Winter League ladies. Muriel Rae, Elizabeth Tosh and Birte Buckett were the first group to tee off on Rosemount to winter greens. Funny bounces on frozen ground made the golf challenging but excellent scores came from the winners.

Just enough ladies to make a valid draw decided to play this morning. As it was a Stanley Clark date, it was played on Lansdowne to winter greens. Putting was a lottery but on the whole the the exercise and the fresh air were enjoyed!

Only five brave souls turned up for the winter league on a bright, frosty, cold day. After some discussion, they decided to play 'a few holes' over Rosemount which was the course of the day.
There will be committee members on duty on the 23rd and the 30th should any members wish get some Festive Season exercise to help keep any excesses at bay!
£254:00 was collected for Macmillan last week - thanks to all.

Ladies' Christmas Lunch 2011

The Christmas Lunch followed a night of high winds, storms and power cuts which threatened to disrupt proceedings. Although there was considerable damage to both courses, our power to the clubhouse was, thankfully, still operating, and the Lady Captain welcomed 56 members, some of who had made considerable efforts to get to the Lunch following disruption on the roads due to fallen trees.

Everyone enjoyed a very convivial afternoon with teasing Christmas quizzes, an excellent lunch and a surprise turn by a mystery fairy artiste who bore a remarkable resemblance to Captain Jean Laburn. Proceedings were rounded off by the Committee's spirited rendition of a golfing version of Jingle Bells, with all ladies joining in.

The Perth and Kinross branch of Macmillan Cancer Support will receive a donation from the ladies who were invited to contribute to the charity in lieu of exchanging presents.

You often hear golfers trotting out that old saying "Why do we play this game??" Why indeed, who in their right mind wants to play in sleet, driving rain and freezing wind? Answer - 9 brave souls who battled round Lansdowne this morning in desperate conditions. In truth the ladies did dither before deciding to chance it and at the end of the morning the last few holes were played in brilliant sunshine....it was just the bit in the middle of the round that left everybody wondering why they had spurned the offer of coffee and a cosy chat in the lounge in favour of playing Winter League.

Ladies Winter Golf

Because of the inclement weather last season, and the lack of winter golf, the previously agreed changes that should have been made to the Winter League and the Stanley Clark Trophies could not be implemented. These changes will now be made.

The Winter League will begin at the end of October and finish towards the end of March – exact dates will be as per the Fixture List and notice board.

The Stanley Clark Trophy will be on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month unless otherwise stated ( e.g. moved to accommodate the Christmas Lunch) and will be on the Lansdowne Course whenever possible. However there may be occasions when it will be played on Rosemount. N.B. Lansdowne only members will be able to play on Rosemount. The course of the day will be played – to full greens or to winter greens as decided by the Golf Club/Green Keeping Management.

These changes have been made for the benefit of the courses and in the long run us, the members.

Full details of the Winter League and Stanley Clark Trophies are in the Competition Rule Book.

Annual Prize Giving 2011

There was an excellent turnout for the Annual Prize Giving 2011 held on Friday, November 18th with most winners and friends enjoying a convivial meal in the dining room before the main event.
The trophies and prizes were presented by Captain Allan McKay and Lady Captain Jean Laburn under the smooth direction of Managing Secretary Douglas Cleeton who made sure everything ran like clockwork. Thanks to the office staff for all their work in organising the magnificent display of gleaming trophies, vouchers and commemorative glasses.
The evening was rounded off with a rousing tribute to Dusty Springfield and Cher, organised by the Social Committee.

Thank you to all the ladies who gave me a real surprise on Friday with the lovely birthday cake and card. It was much appreciated. I don't know how they managed to keep it quiet......and I'm sure they arranged it that I went out last in the winter league so there could be some plotting done !!!! When I get back I will also be handing out penalties to the "Monday crowd", who also managed to be devious and secretive.!!!!!!!.."....".....but it was worth it !!!

Winter League Friday November 4th 2011

Captain Jean Laburn and Vice-Captain Vike Brown were on hand to welcome ladies to the first "official" winter league of the season. The Lady Captain explained the new arrangements whereby the Club will advise us on the day which course will be used for the league. Weather conditions will obviously play a big part in deciding the course and which greens will be in play. The Captain has posted an information sheet about the changes in the locker room.

The first meeting played on Rosemount also marked the start of using mats on the fairway, with most ladies adapting quickly to the change.

Turkey Trot and Winter League

On Friday, 23 ladies braved the slightly damp and blustery weather conditions for the turkey trot.
The winners were J.Laburn 79 (after countback) J. Landsburgh 79 and M.Walker 80.

The Winter League begins on Friday 28th October with a draw; so please have names in by Tuesday 25th. Thereafter draws will be done as per the fixture list - from 9:50 till 10:15 on the day. Please note, because the winter course will not be fully ready for Friday, the normal course will be played, but only 12 holes - 1, 2, and then 9 to 18. These 12 holes will not qualify for inclusion in the Stanley Clark Trophy..

Lady Captain Sandy Bushby gave her report and then handed over to the incoming captain Jean Laburn. The play-off in the Medal Winners Competition for the winners of all SLGA Medals is to be held on Saturday, 24th September, 2011 from 9 a.m. until 10.30 a.m. on the Lansdowne Course. If you wish to be included, you should enter your name on computer by Monday, 19th September, 2011 in order that an official Draw can be made. If you are unable to take part, could you please let either Margaret Kerr or the Club know to avoid anyone missing out.

Wee Course Ladies and the Ladies' Committee Texas Scramble

On Wednesday September 7th 2011, the Wee Course Ladies and The Blairgowrie Ladies' Committee gathered for the annual end of season golf competition. They played a Texas Scramble over the Wee Course starting with a shot gun start. The weather was sunny and dry and everyone enjoyed their game. Afterwards the ladies gathered in the clubhouse for soup and sandwiches. All in all it was a great day and is what golf should be about. Below are pictures of the day.

On Friday October 14th 2011, the Annual Meeting and Prize Giving of the Blairgowrie Ladies’ Section will take place in the lounge of Blairgowrie Golf Club at 6:00 pm. At that meeting, the election of Captain, Vice Captain and committee members will take place. In accordance with the Blairgowrie Ladies’ Management Agreement November 2010:

2.2 Nominations of candidates for the offices of Lady Captain, Lady Vice-Captain and members of the Ladies Section Committee must be intimated in writing to the Club’s Managing Secretary not later than the 15th September in each year. Any candidate for such office or membership must be proposed and seconded by Members who are entitled to vote at an Annual or Special Meeting. A Notice listing any candidate proposed by the Members will be posted on the Notice Boards.

Today the Senior Ladies' Invitational took place on the Rosemount Course. There was a shotgun start with 21 groups on the course playing greensomes. We were very lucky with the weather as the rain came down minutes after everyone had finished. We all then gathered in the dining room for very tasty soup and sandwiches. Results of the Strokeplay Championship and Gold and Silver Medals

The Strokeplay Championship was played for the first time this year and it is the best aggregate of scratch and handicap scores over the Rosemont and Lansdowne Courses. The winner of the Scratch Strokeplay Championship was Gwen Lambie who scored 82 on Lansdowne and 79 on Rosemount totalling 161. Heather Anderson was second with 170.The winner of the Handicap Strokeplay Championship was Liz Fertacz who scored a nett 71 on Lansdowne and a nett 73 on Rosemount. Gwen Lambie was second with 149.

The Gold and Silver Medals were won by Susan Arbuckle. She had a gross 77 to take the Gold Medal. Both Susan and Sandy Bushby scored a nett 71 for the Silver Medal, but Susan had the better inward half.

Well done to Gwen, Liz and Susan.

Sixteen ladies played in the "Turn Up and Play Day" today. Despite the gloomy forecast, the weather was kind to us. The ladies played a stableford and the winner was Sandy Bushby with 38 points. Ruth Alexander was second with 34 points and beat Liz Tosh with a better inward half.

Lady Captain's Day

Lady Captain's Day took place at Blairgowrie Golf Club today. The event was a Texas Scramble which started with a shotgun start and eighteen teams took part. The weather was sunny to begin with but after 9 holes a little bit of rain came on, but that did not dampen the spirits. Afterwards the ladies got together for a drink and an enjoyable lunch in the dining room.
