COLUMBINE CUP 11/04/2017

Graeme Hunter and Lady Captain, Meriel Walker
The annual Match for the Columbine Cup between the Senior  Gents and the Ladies took place on  Tuesday 11th April, with 6 Matches on Rosemount and 6 Matches on Lansdowne.  As usual it was a hard-fought contest, with Matches going right down to the wire.  Lady Captain Meriel Walker had high hopes our Team could  win this 27th encounter, alas, it was not to be...we lost!  The most important thing is, however,  that all had a great time,  the Matches were played in a wonderful spirit and  the day was rounded off with an excellent meal provided by Paul and Jayne.  Thanks to all who helped and made the day a success - and congratulations to  Senior Gents Captain Graeme Hunter and his Team.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE COMPETITION SECRETARY

Amendments to Fixture List

Since the publication of the fixture list, some errors have been discovered. I apologise for
these and would ask ladies to make the following amendments :
Thursday 1st June Please delete Medal 6. The Millennium Trophy is
a Stableford event, therefore cannot be a medal
round as well.

Friday 9th June Replace Lansdowne with Rosemount. All Championship
matches should be on Rosemount this year.
Sunday 10th September The Ladies Autumn Meeting will be on the previous day,
i.e. Saturday 9th.

Tuesday 26th September Turn Up And Play. Replace Lansdowne with Rosemount.

Changes due to closure of holes 6and 7 on Rosemount

It was decided at a recent main committee meeting that holes 6 and 7 on Rosemount
remain closed until mid or late May.

Playing a round over 16 holes does not constitute a Medal Round, therefore Medal 2 on
27th April will have to be deleted, as in all possibility will Medal 4 on May 11th. The Club
Championship Qualifiers and Margaret Salver Competitions will take place, however, as
indicated on these dates.

As the above changes would mean the loss of 3 Medal rounds, it has been decided to
replace the Pinehurst on Thursday 15th June on Rosemount with a Medal round on
Lansdowne.

This will mean that we have a total of 11 Medals in the season, or 12 if the weather
continues to be good and the decision is taken to open holes 6 and 7 by May 11th.

CAPTAIN VS VICE CAPTAIN

Meriel presenting the trophy to her vice captain Janice.

To mark the start of the 2017 Golf Season 52 ladies took park in the Captain versus Vice-Captain Match, a Foursomes over Rosemount. The sun was shining, the temperature was just right, in other words, perfect conditions for golf.  The official photograph was taken of all the ladies taking part, followed by the Ladies’ Captain’s first drive.  The ladies then set off to their starting tees to await the shotgun start. There were many close matches, but the result was a convincing win for the Vice-Captain, Janice Lang and her team.

A drink to celebrate the Opening of the Season was awaiting the ladies on their return to the Clubhouse, including a delicious orange ‘mocktail’ concocted by Angie & Alex.  The Clubhouse was full of spring tulips and daffodils to complete the atmosphere, thanks to Jayne and Angie.

Everyone moved through to the dining room where the beautiful crystal trophy was presented to the winning team. A delicious meal followed and was enjoyed by 46 ladies, and by the level of chatter, all enjoyed the afternoon. There were many members present who had never taken part in this event before and I hope they will be able to enjoy taking part in future years.

I wish you all a fantastic 2017 season of golf, I hope that you play well, and above all enjoy yourselves.

FROM THE MATCH SECRETARY

The Columbine Cup 2017

Following the activities of the Ladies Captain v. Vice Captain match today, 4 members of the Ladies Committee carried out the draw for the match against the Senior Gents on Tuesday 11th April. The ladies pairing have been completed, and the list of the 24 ladies ladies is displayed in the locker room.

I would ask you to confirm you are still able to play, by ticking your name, by Friday 7th April. The reason for this, is that there are 9 lady reserves and it would only be right for those to be given the opportunity to play should your circumstances have changed.

The pairings are now being forwarded to the Gents' Captain, who will complete the final pairing for the day.  I hope everyone enjoys this match, which I am sure will be another fun event, as has been the case over the years.

This morning Lady Captain Meriel Walker assisted the Club Captain Brian Wesencraft to  raise the flag, marking the start of the 2017 season. Hailstones and rain had threatened to dampen spirits, but  the  skies cleared in time for the flag-raising ceremony.
