SENIOR LADIES INVITATION DAY - 27th August

We had a limited field playing in the Senior Ladies Invitation Day today in a 4BBB format on Rosemount with some late call-offs due to the heavy early morning rain and forecast of strong winds.  The course was open however the conditions certainly favoured those teeing off later in the day, who concluded their rounds in warm sunshine.  Vouchers for the following winners can be collected at the Pro Shop:

2nd - Gillian Wallace & Claire Cappocci - 41points.

FRIENDLY COMPOSITE MATCH WITH CARNOUSTIE & PANMURE - 26th August

Tea, coffee chocolate biscuits and a very warm welcome started our afternoon off at the Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club’s historic clubhouse for our final friendly match of the season.

A lady from Carnoustie, Panmure and Blairgowrie teamed up to play together on the challenging Burnside course in a fun format: holes 1-6 one best score required (comfortable), 7-12 two best scores (tension building) with three scores needed on the remaining holes (pressure really on!).

Thankfully the weather was kind to us and the sun came out, which was a relief given the wet conditions of late.

Post golf we enjoyed a delicious two course meal (including some home baking) with our playing partners, and the results were announced.  Well done to Anne Farquharson’s team who were the winners on the day!

Many thanks to Anne Walker, Jo Menzies, Marion Kay, Anne Farquharson and Margaret Johnstone for joining me and giving up their time to represent Blairgowrie.

Maggie Marshall
(team captain)

What a lovely way to conclude our friendly match schedule.  My thanks to everyone that volunteered to play during the season - I do hope you all enjoyed taking part.

LADIES CAPTAIN'S DAY & 100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF EQUAL STATUS CELEBRATION - 23rd August

Thank you to everyone that participated in the Ladies Captain's Day on Friday, which also included a celebration of the 100 year anniversary of ladies gaining equal status as members.

Many ladies embraced the 1920's theme and a special mention is due to Mary Miller who dressed appropriately for golf and also afterwards....deservedly winning the prize for best vintage outfit....and she played with her mother in law's wooden club, Jessie Valentine irons & cleek putter!!

After golf we enjoyed complimentary "Great Gatsby" cocktails before assembling in the dining room for a delicious "Step Back in Time" buffet lunch followed by Maggie giving a presentation on the background to The Blairgowrie Golf Club Ladies Section gaining equal status which also highlighted the achievements of our notable ladies.  We were very privileged to be able to display a selection of Jessie Valentine's trophies and clubs - many thanks to her son Iain for entrusting us with these precious items.

We were then treated to an "All That Jazz" dance, performed by Maggie and Fiona Edwards - another highlight on a memorable day.

Thank you to everyone that was involved prior to and on the day, and for your contributions to my chosen charity.

The golf competition results were:

Rosemount
1st - Freda Erskine & Anne Farquharson (65).
2nd - Sheila Bruce & Cara Davidson (69).
3rd - Heather Anderson & Maggie Marshall (71).

FRIENDLY MATCH v PITLOCHRY - 19th August

We visited Pitlochry on Monday for our penultimate match of the season which was played in a greensomes format as our hosts advised that the course was playing very long with some considerable carries coupled with punishing long grass.  They were absolutely correct, especially when the light drizzle turned to heavy rain, making the undulating greens even more challenging.  Despite a very strong fight back by Heather and Anne we were defeated by the home team in all 4 matches.

We were able to take in some marvellous views before enjoying a two course meal with delicious home made mini desserts in the lovely clubhouse afterwards.

Many thanks to our team, Sue Waddell, Anne Walker, Heather Dawson, Linda Rice, Eileen Brown, Margaret Johnstone and Pauline Hill for accompanying myself as team captain.

We are celebrating 100 years of Ladies gaining equal status this week so I thought it was fitting to show the historic photograph displayed in the clubhouse during the Pitlochry ladies centenary celebrations.

LADIES PAST CAPTAINS DAY - 13th August

It was my pleasure to welcome 10 Past Captains on the first tee on Rosemount for their annual Competition.  All ladies set off in dry weather however the rain that was forecast duly arrived and those playing on the Wee Course very sensibly made the decision to skip the golf!!

Fourteen Past Captains were joined by myself and Vice Captain Maggie Marshall for an enjoyable two course meal in the dining room afterwards.  My thanks to Margaret Hunter for producing the commemorative menu, celebrating the 100th anniversary of ladies becoming equal members, and for giving us all an interesting tale on the life of Miss Margot Cox who served as Ladies Captain from 1934 to 1938.

The winner of the Muriel Rae Claret Jug was Fiona Johnston with 32 points, just ahead of  Gill Tissell with 30 points (on countback from Meriel Walker and Janice Lang)  - very good scoring in less than favourable conditions!!

Thank you to all Past Captains for attending and making it a memorable day.

FRIENDLY MATCH v DOWNFIELD - 12th August

Thankfully we didn't cancel our away match at Downfield as, for once, the weather forecast was correct with the torrential rain, thunder and lightening which battered Tayside in the morning giving way to blue skies and a warm and sunny afternoon.

Our ladies commenced their games in the drizzle however by the back nine the umbrellas were up to shade us from the sun rather than the rain!  The course was in superb condition, however trying to negotiate the numerous ditches (with water) and the very slow greens proved a challenge for the visitors, with the home side winning the match 2 - 1.

After our match we enjoyed a delicious two course hot buffet. Many thanks to Sue Waddell (team captain), Fiona Edwards, Anne Walker, Sheila Bruce, Linda Rice and Carolyn Haddow for representing the club.

HANDICAP LEAGUE MATCH v DUNKELD - 11th August

We played our last Perth & Kinross Handicap League match in glorious sunshine on Rosemount on Sunday 11 August.  Suntan lotion was a must in the hot conditions.

Five ladies from each club enjoyed the course at its best and with some very close matches; our visitors winning by just one point.

Post golf we enjoyed refreshing, cool drinks outside on the patio.

My thanks go to Jo Menzies, Gill Tissell, Elaine Robson for giving up their time to represent Blairgowrie, and with a special thanks to Pauline Hill who stepped in to play at short notice.

100 year Anniversary Celebration

In 1924, ladies gained equal status as members of The Blairgowrie Golf Club, and the 100 year anniversary of this occasion will be recognised on the day.  Maggie Marshall has organised the celebrations and a poster giving full details is displayed in the locker room.

There is no requirement to dress in the style of the 1920’s but there is a prize on offer for the best outfit so look out your flapper dresses, Great Gatsby headbands, long gloves, pearls and vintage jewellery!!

We hope as many of you as possible will be able to join us for a fun day.

Elaine Robson, Ladies Captain & Maggie Marshall, Ladies Vice Captain

FRIENDLY MATCH v CRIEFF - 29th July

We welcomed the Crieff ladies to Blairgowrie for our friendly match in pleasant conditions. The wind was light and there was only a very brief shower.  The course was well presented but some of the visitors (and local members!) found the greens challenging.  As always, this fixture was played in a spirit of friendly competition and one match in particular was extremely close.  The overall result was a satisfying draw.  Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious meal in the dining room.  Thanks to the Catering team for looking after us so well.

Many thanks to the Blairgowrie ladies: Anne Walker, Morna Bell, Gill Tissell (team captain), Sue Waddell, Margaret Johnstone and Linda Rice for representing the Club.
