TURKEY TROT RESCHEDULED

Time for the Turkey Trot competition and it was deja vu yesterday morning waking up to heavy rain with a forecast of rain continuing for most of the morning together with winds of 40 miles per hour. Needless to say, there were very few ladies keen for a game of golf and in view of the low numbers I decided to cancel the competition. A few hardy souls went out for a bounce game and surprise, surprise the weather improved as the morning went on albeit it was pretty windy.

The Wee Course ladies also abandoned their competition and headed to the clubhouse for a coffee and a chat!

The Turkey Trot will be run next Friday 4th November on Rosemount in conjunction with the first round of the Winter League. As the Winter League is a 12-hole competition, on this occasion the Turkey Trot Stableford will be over 12-holes too. Only holes 1-12 to be played with each player getting nett 2 points for holes 13-18.

The online booking has been amended and you only need to sign up once to enter both competitions and complete one scorecard. The Turkey Trot has an entry fee of £2 per player. Should you wish to opt out please advise the starter before your round. Please note however that this will prevent you from winning the Turkey Trot competition (vouchers to be presented at the Christmas lunch), however you can play to win the prize of a golf ball (presented to the winners of Division 1 and Division 2/3 combined) in the Winter League competition.

Please remember to bring your fairway mat with you. Fingers crossed for better weather next week!

WINTER COMPETITIONS

For those of you that attended the Ladies AGM on Friday 7th October you will already be aware of a minor change to this year’s Winter Competitions format. This has also been communicated in an email sent out from the Club on 21st October.

This is due to the World Handicap System precluding the playing of 12-hole competitions on courses measured over 9 or 18 holes; hence the intelligent golf (ig) system cannot support our existing winter league formats.

To allow us to continue playing 12 holes, whilst using ig to compile the results, the Winter League, Winter Eclectic and Stanley Clark Trophy will now be played as stableford (previously strokeplay). The competitions will be set up to record scores for 18 holes, with players entering the appropriate gross score to allocate a nett par (two stableford points) for the holes that are excluded from the Winter competitions; i.e., 13 to 18 on Rosemount and 3 to 8 on Lansdowne.  A nett par should also be recorded for any of the competition holes that are closed on the day.

Full details of the operation of all the Ladies’ Winter Competitions have been posted on the notice board in the Locker Room for you to consult at any time, together with a “gross score ready reckoner” to aid completion of scorecards if required.

The main points regarding the operation of the Winter Competitions for 2022/23 are:

·     The first Winter League competition will take place on Rosemount on Friday 4th November; the Eclectic and Winter Ringer run from 1st November to 31st March.

·       Competitions will continue to be over 12 holes (1-12 on Rosemount, 1-2, 9-18 on Lansdowne).

·    They will be set up as 18-hole competitions and any hole not included in the competition or is closed should be given a nett score of 2 points.

·       As in 2021 there will be no winter handicaps.

·       All winter competitions are non-counting for handicap purposes.

·       Playing handicaps will be calculated as 95% Course Handicap.

·   Competition times will be mornings only, commencing at 9.30am on Friday for the main competition, with an alternate day the prior Sunday.

·   There will be a weekly prize (a golf ball) presented to the winners of both Division 1 and Division 2&3 combined.

·      The Winter League is played on both courses; the Winter Eclectic will run on Rosemount whilst both the Stanley Clark (played every 2nd and 4th Friday) and Winter Ringer are on Lansdowne.

·       All completed scorecards to be entered into the computer.

·      Additional cards may be submitted for the Eclectic at any time as long as they are verified by another playing partner; the Pro Shop must be advised prior to play so that a competition for that day can be set up (to enable your scores to be input).

·       The only competition needing your manual input will be the Winter Ringer (should you wish to enter it). Ringer cards on competition days should be placed in the box at the PSI terminal; additional cards should be placed in the box in the Locker Room following play.

Please don’t forget fairway mats will be required for all play as of Thursday 3rd November (in a competition, mats are to be used on the fairway only).

We encourage all ladies with all golfing abilities to enter and play in our weekly winter competitions. They are fun and are a great way to meet up with old friends, make new friendships, and a good opportunity for ladies to socialise following their game.

 Wee Course Ladies Winter League

This will run along with the Ladies Winter League with the Winter Ringer also running on the same basis. The Office will complete a draw at 10am on the preceding Wednesday. Should the Wee Course Ladies wish to turn up and play on the day they must register at the Pro Shop by 9:45am and the Pro Shop Team will fit you into the existing draw.

TURKEY TROT - FRIDAY 28TH OCTOBER

Next Friday 28th October we have our Turkey Trot competition, which is being held on Lansdowne. This is an individual, non-counting, Stableford competition. This is a morning only draw, with a £2 entry fee payable to the starter. The winners will receive vouchers, which will be presented at the Ladies Christmas lunch on Friday 9th December. The online booking is now open. I look forward to seeing you there.

PINEHURST - FRIDAY 21ST OCTOBER

Nine pairs competed in Friday's Pinehurst competition in what turned out to be a pleasantly mild morning. Everyone seemed to enjoy and not get too confused with the format! The runners up were Gill Tissell and Meriel Walker with 72 on count back from Sheila Bruce and Angela Rooney. I am rather embarrassed to say that the winners with a score of 70 were myself (Sue Waddell) and Elaine Robson.

Thanks to Past Captain, Gill Tissell for taking the photo!

Nature note: Gill Tissell spotted this colourful mushroom on Rosemount earlier in the week. The Fly agaric is the home of fairies and magical creatures and a lover of birch woodland, where it helps trees by transferring nutrients into their roots, but if eaten can cause hallucinations and psychotic reactions. So if approaching ladies, please approach with extreme care!!

The enchanting Fly agaric!

WINTER LEAGUE MATCH v ANSTRUTHER - Sunday 16th October

We enjoyed lovely conditions when we welcomed the visiting ladies from Anstruther for our first Winter League Friendly Match of the season. The Rosemount course was in excellent condition and everyone had a very enjoyable day followed by delicious soup and sandwiches in the dining room afterwards.

Thanks go to Elaine Robson (team captain), Anne Farquharson, Fiona Edwards, Barbara Lyburn, Noreen Fordyce and Meriel Walker for representing the club and for bringing home a 2/1 win.

Greensomes - Friday 14th October

Fourteen pairs competed in Friday’s Greensomes competition on Rosemount in cool, but mainly sunny conditions. The winners, with an impressive score of 66 were Sheila Bruce and June Dargie; runners up were Fiona Edwards and Anne Farquharson with 73. Below is the Ladies Captain Sue presenting the winners with golf balls.

Well done ladies!

Next Friday we have another pairs competition, this time a Pinehurst on Rosemount and, for those of you who are unfamiliar with this format, an explanation is as follows:

Each player drives, for the second shot you play each other’s ball and then for the third shot you select the one ball you wish to play and then play alternate shots thereafter until completion of the hole.

LADIES ANNUAL MEETING - 7/10/22

The Ladies Annual Meeting took place on Friday 7th October at 6pm in the clubhouse, with 31 full members, 8 Wee course members and with 26 apologies received. Lady Captain, Gill Tissell welcomed everyone to the meeting. AU REVOIR AND THANKS FROM GILL

This is my final blog in which I would like to thank most sincerely all the lady members for their kindness and support during my year as Ladies Captain.  It has been a great experience for me but I am now ready to pass the reins to Sue, the new Ladies Captain, who I am sure is going to have a very successful year.

Thank you to everyone who played in the Captain's Farewell Texas Scramble yesterday.  It was intended to be a fun competition to round off the year and I think everyone enjoyed it.  Well done to the winning team of Heather Anderson, Pauline Hill, Margaret Hunter and Janet McKenzie who had a terrific score of 57, beating Lorraine MacGregor, Jo Stewart and Gillian Wallace into second place with 62. Thanks to my excellent playing partners, Moira Campsie, Fiona Edwards and Erica Espley for their company.

I would like to thank you for the beautiful flowers I received at yesterday's Ladies Annual Meeting, as well as the photo book of my year which is a wonderful memento.

I look forward to a relaxing golfing year (but I will be trying to win some prizes of course!) and will see you soon on the course.

It just remains for me to wish Sue, her Vice-Captain, Elaine, and Committee members Heather and Anne all the very best for the forthcoming season.
