WINTER LEAGUE 28/12/12

The course was open for Winter League this morning with the warning:   "Frost still in ground, wet on top".  No one  fancied going out in the rain, except one  enthusiastic lady  who decided to chance 9 holes on the Wee Course....she explained she had received an umbrella-holder for her trolley as a Christmas present  and wanted to try it out.....
The rest of us settled for coffee and a chat.  Hopefully conditions will  improve next week.

ICE GOLF

Rosemount was open today with the following warning. CONDITIONS VERY DANGEROUS DUE TO ICE AND WATER.  If anyone is unsure what that statement means  --  this was the winter green on the 14th at midday. Every winter green was like this and conditions underfoot were treacherous.  Seven holes were enough  for the Vice-Captain.

CAN YOU HELP?

Muriel McPherson has lost a COBRA pitching wedge, last used  playing Winter League on 30th November.  If anyone found the club and stuck it in their golf bag, meaning to hand it in later, can they please let Muriel know.

The weather is not looking very hopeful for Winter League on Friday 14th ....but some ladies will be there for coffee and a chat if golf is impossible.

Christmas Lunch 2012

Despite last night's heavy snowfall, fifty six ladies managed to attend the 2012 Christmas Lunch. It was a perfect setting with snow covered fairways. The event had been carefully planned by the ladies' committee and everyone enjoyed a lovely meal, two Christmas quizzes and some very very fine singing. It was a marvellous opportunity for ladies to meet new members as well as catch up with old friends.  The ladies attending generously donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

LADIES COACHING 2013

Golf in the spring next year may seem far off, but the  2013 sign-up sheets have gone up for Charles Dernie's popular  coaching lessons which begin on March 6th.  The courses last for 6 weeks with afternoon and morning dates available on various days.  The cost is £28 for  the  entire course.  If you have not attended one of these courses before, it's an ideal way to prepare for the new season's golf. Topics covered include driving, iron play, chipping, bunker play and putting.

SOCIAL GOLF

Some of the ladies played in the  mixed Social Golf   competition on Sunday  on Rosemount to winter greens.   The best lady was Milly Douglas  who  came in with 43 points, but that was not enough to  beat the winner, Ron Dow, who carded  48 points. One of the participants, Graham Clark, had a Hole in One at the 17th.  Graham is a new member  and this was his first round on Rosemount.  Social Golf is an informal "turn up and play" arrangement where  you can come along on Sunday for a 1.00pm draw.   The idea is to play 9 or 12  holes, depending on weather conditions.  if you come with a partner, you'll go into  the draw together, otherwise it's luck of the draw.   Those ladies who played on Sunday enjoyed the game which was played in a very relaxed and friendly  manner.

WINTER LEAGUE 02/11/12

Winter League was cancelled this morning due to heavy rain and partial flooding of the greens on Rosemount.    This was most disappointing for the ladies, but we made the best of it by adjourning to the lounge for coffee and a chat.
The Social Convener, Liz Fertacz, would like to remind everyone about the St Andrews Day Ceilidh on Friday evening,  30th November. Tickets are now on sale from the catering staff priced £15.00 for a one-course meal and tea/coffee to follow.
The Ceilidh entertainment will be in the hands of the talented JAKE DONNELLY so please get your tickets for an entertaining evening of foot-stomping fun!

WINTER LEAGUE 26/10/12

On the 1st  tee...Birte and Jan

We played the  first Winter League of the new season  in lovely sunny conditions, with the trees on Lansdowne showing off a panoply of beautiful autumn colours.  Sadly we received news last week of the death of Betty Scott, a long-standing member of  Blairgowrie Golf Club, so several ladies withdrew from the competition to attend Betty's funeral  which took place in Monifeith today.

The Winter League  is played off 2/3 handicap over 12 holes.
Silver Winner    44    Margaret  Hunter
Silver R/Up       48    Margaret  Kerr
Bronze Winner  51   Birte Buckett  (bih)
Bronze R/Up     51   Ann Spence

Dates for the Diary
The Christmas Lunch is on Friday December 7th. The tickets  will be on sale shortly,  complete with menu choice.

FROM THE COMPETITIONS SECRETARY

The Ladies play competitions for the Stanley Clark Trophy, Winter League and Winter Ringer every Friday morning (weather permitting) during the winter months commencing the end of October to the first week in March. We play in threes for only 12 holes, the first tee-off time being 10 a.m. and play will be on Lansdowne (or on Rosemount, if Lansdowne is not available). The greenkeepers advise what is the "course of the day". If you would like to join in, please come along to the ladies locker room upstairs before 9.45 a.m. on Friday in order to be included in a draw which is done at 9.50 a.m. Sometimes, if there are sufficient numbers, a second draw, is made at 10 a.m. We usually have a small get together afterwards and donate a few small prizes to the winners and runners up. Do join us if you can – it's really good fun and nice to meet up on a Friday morning.

 Margaret Kerr
Competition Secretary 2012

INFO UPDATE

WINTER LEAGUE
The Winter League, played over 12 holes,  begins on Friday 26th October WITH A DRAW on Lansdowne,  so please have names in by Tuesday 23rd October.   This will also be the first round  of the Stanley Clark Trophy, which  runs on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month.  Thereafter draws will be done as per the fixture list - from 9:50am till 10:15am on the day.
The arrangements for the Winter League, as far as we know,  are that the Club will advise us on the day which course will be used.  Weather conditions will obviously play a big part in deciding the course and which greens will be in play.

MATS :  Mats will be in use from Monday 5th November

PROPOSED HANDICAP LEAGUE
At the Scratch League AGM it was proposed by Moira Lumby that a Handicap League be set up especially for Clubs who do not have enough lower  handicap players to field a Scratch League team.  We have a Scratch Team, so this would be an additional team.
The format would be teams of 5 playing singles in a league.
At the Ladies Annual Meeting   Moira asked if anyone would be  interested in  forming a Handicap Team at Blairgowrie.   To give the committee an idea of the level of interest,  there is a sign-up sheet in the Locker Room. For further information contact Moira Lumby on moira.lumby@btinternet.com

EXCHANGE DAY
At the Ladies Annual Meeting  it was  mentioned that Edzell Golf Club has asked if we would  like to have an Exchange Day,  when 20 of  their players come to Blairgowrie and 20 of our  players visit Edzell.  The Club has agreed to give us some times for this Exchange.
The snag is we are looking at beginning this Exchange in  2017....
The Committee is aware this is a long way off, but if you think this is  a  good idea and might be interested in taking part, please sign up in the Locker Room.

ANNUAL MEETING AND PRIZE GIVING 2012

The Ladies' Annual Meeting and Prize Giving took place  on Friday 12th October  at 6:00 pm in the lounge.  Earlier in the day all courses were closed due to severe flooding, resulting in the cancellation of the  Captain's Farewell Competition.
Lady Captain Jean Laburn  opened the meeting  and gave her thoughts about her year as Captain, which, she said, had been dominated by the weather.  Following her report and the reports of office-bearers  Jean handed over to the incoming captain Vike Brown.   Vike introduced  the Vice-Captain, Margaret Hunter, and the new members of the Committee – Meriel Walker, Fiona Barron, Hazel Grant and Avril Smith (in absentia)  and thanked those committee members  stepping down –  Anne King, Jacqui Landsburgh and Sheila Ritchie.    Jean was presented with a lovely floral tribute as a token of  thanks for all her work.

DATES FOR THE DIARY
16th October   Ladies Bridge in the lounge 12.30pm - 2.30pm
19th October   Turkey Trot. £2.00 entry, mixed draw
7th December  Ladies Christmas Lunch

After the meeting  the Ladies Prizes were presented by Vike.  Our thanks go to Competition Secretary, Margaret Kerr, for setting out the results which are shown below.  The business matters over, we all  headed to the dining room for a  tasty meal and convivial company.
