Dear Ladies
I would like to wish you all a Happy & Healthy New Year and I hope that the Number One Resolution on your list for 2014 is to PLAY MORE GOLF!
At this time of year I know it is easy to fall out of the habit of playing golf, the thought of a warm, comfortable seat with coffee and a magazine for company is very tempting, and it takes an effort to rake out woolly hats, gloves, waterproofs and three layers of sweaters. But just think how much good 12 holes of winter golf will do you - fresh air, exercise, weight loss, catching up with fellow golfers....
In the next few weeks the winter weather is guaranteed to be unpredictable.....but be assured, if there is no golf, the committee will arrange an event, in the Clubhouse, every Friday - it might be a fun Quiz on the rules of golf, a talk about golf balls, a putting competition, bridge tips....whatever.... various committee members will always be here. Any suggestions welcome.
I am looking forward to fun and happy times in the months to come - but for that to happen, I need YOU to sign up and play! 2014 promises to be a great year with the 125th Anniversary Celebrations throughout the season and added spice of the Junior Ryder Cup in September. How lucky we are these events are happening during our time as Members.
I would also like to mention that my Captain's Charity for 2014 will be Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia. Any money raised for TCCL goes direct to support the children and families in Tayside who need it most. TCCL don't pay any wages and the committee is staffed by volunteers who don't take a penny for their hard work.
Their mission is to support local children and funds are used throughout our local area of Angus, North East Fife and Perthshire.
TCCL has been serving the Tayside and North East Fife community since 1994 and work closely with the oncology staff at Ward 29 in Ninewells Hospital. You can read about the Charity and its work at :-

Thanks!

WINTER LEAGUE 27/12/2013
There were no takers for the last Winter League of 2013....and looking at the weather forecast, it was no wonder. Hopefully the weather will improve and we can launch 2014 off to a flying start on Lansdowne next Friday.
The Office is closed on January 1 and 2, so there will be no Draw. Please meet in the Locker Room for 9.45am.

Winter League 20th December on Lansdowne
The Winter League on Friday 20th December is the last one before Christmas, so we are hoping to have some fun with Hidden Holes... for example, if you rack up a 10 at one of the holes, DON'T PANIC, as they say, it could be a winning score and win a little prize for that hole. Please sign up on line, or, if more convenient, turn up on the day. Those ladies who enter on the day should draw cards in the Locker Room.
P.S. WEATHER PERMITTING, otherwise coffee in the lounge!

BLAIRGOWRIE LADIES' CHRISTMAS LUNCH FRIDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2013
The Blairgowrie Ladies' Christmas lunch took place today. The weather was kind to us and sixty nine ladies managed to attend. Lady Captain Margaret Hunter and her committee worked hard to provide an excellent event with loads of entertainment. We had quizzes, anagrams and guessing the titles and performers of well known Christmas songs. Fiona Johnstone appeared as Santa's little helper and gave us a rendition of "An Ode to a Golf Ball". She also brought for all to see a genuine Olympic torch and a number of ladies had their photo taken with it. At the end of the lunch, past captain Vike Brown gave the vote of thanks. All in all a very successful day enjoyed by everyone.

DO YOU HAVE THE WRONG COAT?
Did you take the wrong coat from the downstairs Ladies Cloakroom? Liz Fertacz went to get her black leather coat after the Ladies Christmas Lunch, only to find her coat had disappeared. Someone had put on the wrong coat and gone home in it, so please check your coat rack and give Liz a call if you have her coat! Thanks...

JUNIOR PRIZE-GIVING
I attended the Junior Prize-giving today and met Katy Alexander, winner of the Isobel Murray Trophy for Junior Girls. Katy is Junior Girl Golfer of the year and also won the Alastair Gibb trophy. Unfortunately Katy does not have many girls to play with in the Junior Section, in fact, she is usually the only girl in the competitions. The Junior Convener, Stuart Graham, told me that girls had come along to the special open coaching sessions in summer, but gradually they fell away. It's too bad, Katy is a very talented and keen young golfer...if anyone knows of any more keen young girl golfers, we'd like to know. Margaret Hunter, Lady Captain

TIME OF FUTURE ANNUAL MEETINGS
At the Annual Meeting on October 11th 2013 a Member asked if it would be possible to hold future meetings at 11.00am instead of 6.00pm as some members did not like attending an evening meeting.
There were comments from working ladies that this would effectively bar them from attending any future Annual Meetings.
The Lady Captain agreed to take a sounding from Members as to the time of future meetings. If you would like to register a preference, you will find slips on the notice-board in the Locker Room. Please fill in, place in the envelopes provided, close, and put into the Card Box. Closing date 19th December.

1930's BLAIRGOWRIE BLAZER BUTTON
Pictured below is a button from a Blairgowrie Lady's Golf Club blazer circa 1930 which belonged to Jane Hendry. The button was donated to Blairgowrie Golf Club by her daughter Margaret Leggat who now lives in Australia. She very kindly sent it to Janette Hamilton who passed it on to the Captain at the time, Jean Laburn, who organised for the button to be mounted with a plaque. This was done by Lorraine Welsh, daughter of Heather Welsh. If you would like to see the real thing, you will find it in the trophy cabinet by the Pro Shop.

LETTER FROM EMILY AIRD
Hullo Ladies!
My team, The Lady Jets, finished fifth in our final two tournaments, both of which were in Oklahoma - one in Edmund and the other in Fort Sill. This marked the end of our fall season and our next tournament isn't until February when we travel to San Antonio. Unfortunately being in off season means that there is less golf and more school, but with finals approaching fast that's probably not such a bad idea.
I finally turned eighteen and was able to get an American bank account! We went out dancing as a team along with the men's golf team and I learned how to two-step which was a lot of fun. We celebrated Halloween (which is even bigger here than I realized) by going to a corn maze and successfully getting lost, but those things are confusing, especially in the dark when none of us thought to bring a torch - oops...
Off season practice though is a little different, our Coach has us doing some interesting things, we have to chip and putt using just our left arms - it was easier than I thought it would be though. Although with it starting to get colder we have to get inventive with keeping ourselves warm, the other day half of us had to do jumping jacks while the other half were chipping into a circle and then we switched - I think it's safe to say I've never done so many jumping jacks in my entire life - but they did the job!
The semester is almost over, with only two more weeks until finals begin, it won't be long until I'm home again, not sure if I'm ready for how cold it's going to be. Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best Wishes
Emily

WINTER LEAGUE DRAW
LADIES...the Committee has been approached by several players to ask if a Draw can be done for the Winter League. The reason for the request is that ladies who have distances to travel are finding they may have to leave the house about one hour to 45 minutes before the Draw in the Locker Room and if they are drawn last, they then sit around the Locker Room for an hour or more, before playing 12 holes. Some ladies have said they feel the amount of time spent to play 12 holes isn't worth it.
We appreciate that it is handy/convenient to look at the weather and be able to decide on the day if you want to play or not, so, after consulting ladies who play Winter League, we are going to have a trial period when a Draw will be done, BUT you can still turn up on the day.
From Friday 15th November the Winter League arrangements will be :
You can sign up on line until 10.00 am on Thursday and a Draw will be made by the Office and posted on the Club Website.
If you decide ON THE DAY you want to play, just come to the Locker Room and a Random Draw will be made for ladies playing after the Official Draw. A Committee Member will be there, so you are guaranteed a Partner. Depending on numbers the Draw for the "on the day players" will be done by picking a card.
This arrangement is being tried to encourage more ladies to play Winter League, especially those who have quite a way to travel to the Club.
We shall review these arrangements at the end of December.

BLAIRGOWRIE LADIES' BOOK CLUB
The next book,to be discussed on Tuesday 26th November at 2.30,(after bridge and golf) is The Black House by Peter May. The Black House really ticks all the boxes for a cop-led murder mystery – a gruesome crime (two, actually), a corkscrew plot, a fabulous sense of place, and a thoroughly believable police detective trying to keep his balance as his personal life implodes and his professional one threatens to blow up in his face.
If you are a keen reader and would like to take part, then please let Jen Geddes or Sandy Bushby know.

Next week sees the start of the Winter League. Margaret Kerr, Competition Secretary, has compiled this guide to the Friday Competitions
The Ladies play three
competitions in one, the Stanley Clark Trophy, Winter League and Winter Ringer
every Friday morning (weather permitting) during the winter months commencing
the end of October to the first week in March. We play in 3’s for only 12 holes, the first tee-off time
being 10 a.m. and play will be on Lansdowne wherever possible (or the course of
the day i.e. Rosemount if Lansdowne is not available). The greenkeepers will advise what is the "course of the
day".
To get us all started, for the
first of these competitions on 25th October, entry is online with an official draw being done by the Club.
If you would like to join in,
please come upstairs to the Ladies’ Locker Room before 9.45 a.m. on Fridays in
order to be included in the draw which is done at 9.50 a.m. If there are sufficient numbers,
a second draw is made at 10 a.m.
We have a small get together afterwards with a short prizegiving of a
small gift (usually donated by ladies) to the winner that day and a golf ball to the runner up.
• Please note for the Winter League
only, if you win, then 1 is deducted from your handicap and that is your
handicap for the next round.
• The Winter Ringer has its own
rules in the Rule Book in the upstairs Ladies Locker Room.
• The Stanley Clark Trophy is
played only on the second and fourth Fridays of the month.
Come and join us if you can –
it's really good fun and nice to meet different ladies to play with.

Turn Up And Play.
Today saw the last Turn Up and Play of 2013 (where has the season gone!). A great turn out of 17 ladies played in a Flag competition on Lansdowne, organised by Avril Smith. Overhead conditions were extremely kind and the greens extremely fast! Janice Lang made it all the way to the green side bunker on the 18th (off 7/8 handicap) before planting her flag. This was the little flag that travelled farthest round the course earning Janice first prize. Well done Janice!
A big thank you to all the ladies who supported this competition and the many others who have turned up for these events (in all weathers) over the past season.
We look forward to welcoming you all and hopefully many new ladies to TUAP in 2014!

NEWS FROM AMERICA
Just received an email from Emily Aird - and it sounds as if
she is having a great time!
"The Jets ( my University golf team) have gotten off to a good start this fall, we finished third in our first tournament in Pueblo, Colorado where I manage to contribute two 77’s and secured a top ten finish for myself. Our second tournament was in San Angelo Texas and we finished runner up, losing out to St. Edwards College by two strokes, I had a really good first round of 74 but not such a good second - 81. But following these two performances we are now ranked third in the nation.
she is having a great time!

I’m
having a great time here in Kansas, the heat took some getting used to
but we did have our first storm (since I’ve been here) the other day and
it was quite spectacular - the thunder was so intense our entire room
shook with the force of it! The rain made me feel very at home though.
Everybody here is very nice and the other girls on the team are
great and we get along really well, they’ve made the road trips very
entertaining - which is always nice considering we had two eight hour
drives for our first two tournaments, fortunately the remaining two in
the fall are shorter journeys but they are not until October and I will
be sure to let you know how I get on."

UPDATE: Senior Women's British Open Championship
Just heard from Heather Anderson that the second round of the Senior Women's British Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Ireland has been abandoned after a lengthy suspension of play due to rain and high winds, howling over the course at 50mph, making play impossible.
The Championship has been reduced from three rounds to two, so the 36-hole cut has been scrapped and everyone will play a second and final round tomorrow.
FINAL RESULTS : Wind and rain again battered the players on the final round with nobody breaking 80! Heather finished in 63rd position - and will be glad to get home!

UPDATE : Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship
The Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship is taking place over Royal Portrush in Ireland this week, with Heather Anderson again flying the flag for Blairgowrie. Conditions today were brutal - rain, wind, freezing conditions and a long course made scoring difficult, resulting in a CSS of 79, reduction only. Heather came in with an 89, but with only 10 scores under 80, she feels she has a chance of making the cut. We wish her well....
